I think Hisham's Vader's quest made sense.
In a new hope if I remember correctly when Luke was trained by Obiwan, the emperor & vader both had sensed a disturbance in the force that a Jedi is against them but they weren't sure who it was. It became more & more clearer later as more things were uncovered by his troops as in the Vader's quest. I guest Vader could have figured out as it involves coincidently/ fatefully the name Skywalker, which was his true name, that he had given up everything for the sake of Padme.
When Vader killed Obiwan, Luke was there and Vader saw him, and the one pilot that destroyed the death star was him too. Vader would suspect anything associated with Obiwan. Looking back in EPIII Since Obiwan had left him to die on Mustafar and has possibly taken Padme with him. There is the possibility of obiwan having his offspring.
But when Vader had confronted Luke in person I think its possible that by the force Vader could know at once whether or not the person in front of him is his son. For Vader I think he would risk anything just to get to Luke, if he is right then he would have the advantage of getting his son first before the emperor does, if he is wrong the by all means kill the pilot that destroy the death star. Either way he wins.

Vader found out that Leia was his twin sister durng said fight during ROTJ. I remember this happen only after Luke met Yoda (who is dying) and after that obiwan's spirit told him that "You were our only hope. Yoda felt we could find another but its too late. The other Yoda spoke of is your twin sister'. That's how Luke got to know his sister. So when later Luke confonted Vader for the last time, Vader could read Luke's mind, and that's how Vader found out about Leia.

a hand, actually. a point if i may, Yoda was there at the twins' birth, so how could he forget about Leia and only have "watched this one from a far"? it was like Ben and Yoda were pinning all of their hopes solely on Luke and not both of them.

He didn't forget about her. It appears that they've sacrificed Leia's potential by putting her safely in the hands of a planetary royalty. The problem with that is she'll be too much of a public figure to train secretly without the Emperor and her dad not knowing. Luke however is at a place arguably Vader would have problems looking at because it's a place which he tried to move away from and where his mother died. And there was a novel or comic that dealt with the issue that Vader was too emotionally frakked up to even be on Tatooine (retconning the reason why he sent troops down to search for the droids instead of going in himself in ANH). On the other hand it's stupid putting Luke with the Lars where if Vader grew out of his funk, he'd just send someone to look up on the Lars and find out that ... tadaaa... some kid named Skywalker living with them.

The very fact that Luke still retained his real family name is frakked up. But then again in the real world this is because of Georgie's horrible story telling abilities...
I bet you any fan out there can write a better storyline then GL in terms of continuity...

aunt and uncle. so, i think it was only right that luke kept his last name than take his aunt and uncles; especially since Owen was his father's step brother and not even half blooded brother. and if GL's story telling abilities are so horrible, how do you explain SW's success and why we're even here talking about something related to SW?

Ok seriously...the OT(Original Trilogy) were ok on their own, but when GL went back and meddle with it, and made the PT(Prequel Trilogy), he messed the whole thing up big time.

Like the Han Solo/Greedo Canteena scene. Even a numbskull like me can spot the fake actor and I heted the fact that Han Solo is a nice guy there.
