Stephen Sommers hardly fit the criteria of a good director. His last good movie was "The Mummy". That was classic! But his follow-ups, "The Mummy Returns" and "The Scorpion King" were hardly earth shattering. Top that off with that piece of turd "Van Helsing". If it was directed by someone with a good record, e.g. Michael Bay or Spielberg or even Bryan Singer, I would have been looking forward to this. But as it is now, I wouldn't be putting high hopes on this one.
I agree w the fact that Stephen Sommers is not in the category of 'good' director... even for a commercial movie like this... however w the type of cast they have in the line up... i think they could only afford Stephen Sommers who has had a decent commercial movie release. The Mummy movie was fun only because of 2 reasons... there wasn't any old-classic adventure theme movies out for a while (it rode solely on the Indy hype) & Brendan Frasier played his character well which basically was enough to sell the movie well!!
His next? An old-classic remix of the famous spooky villians from the night... Count Dracula, Frankenstein, Werewolf' and Van Helsing himself not to mention the Angelic implications of Gabriel. It was yet another rare commercial theme that he managed to make some what success from....
And now G.I. Joe.... yet another old-classic.... hmmm... sounds all to familiar... BUT u never know. Its hard to judge a movie b4 u watch it. I'm a big G.I. Joe fan... fan of the comics...cartoon... & toys.... still have the comics & toys too!! With their weapons mind u!! So currently i'd say the cast is VERY VERY impressive & the writers are fairly decent... but its the director's position tt is a bit uncertain. Guess we'll just have to see... only when the movie comes out.
Few points to ponder:- 1) Its not a Marvel Studios movie but a Hasbro one... 2) I believe that brendan frasier will end up in the movie since the Rock is there... (friends of Mr Sommers) 3) This may seem like a positive or a negative... the fact that its not like the comics or cartoon... & most of all its not even like the Ultimates... Ultimate G.I. Joe.... a la Ironman, Hulk, Thor, Cap & the Avengers... so it could end up like an X-Men / Spiderman or Fantastic Four / Ghost Rider... time will tell
