I'm wondering what is the likely of one being taxed for bringing back items from overseas. Any sort of items that will get taxed ? What's your experience on this subject ?
I'm overseas at the moment and seem to be eyeing some items here. So I'd like to at least know if there's a possibility of being taxed should I buy the items and bring it back. I'm mostly talking in the lines of DVDs, audio CDs or DVD/CD games. Or what about shoes ?

From my experience, if you're coming through KLIA you probably won't get taxed, unless you're bringing back like 5 or 10 of each item. One way to be almost sure of not being taxed is to gift wrap potentially taxable item and say its a parting gift from a friend there.

Some tips: + Don't look like you're carrying a lot... limit to one carry bag plus one suitcase if possible. + Use Green Lane if within tax-free guidelines, but -CENSORED-. + Wear the new shoes. + CDs & DVDs.... - CENSORED-. + If got friends travelling with you then distribute stuffs amongst them.
Kastams mostly look for electronic products.

A truly EFFECTIVE tip indeed and my experience has proven that it WORKS. Will use that when I personally bring back the Large Size Boxed 1984 VINTAGE ROTJ Imperial Shuttle in the future, that is IF I don't get it via eBay. ;D

thanks for the tips. thought those tips are more for avoiding being taxed (which I suppose everyone would like to do), but let's say one does get taxed, any ideas as to how much will be taxed ?

How much you get taxed depends on: 1) Which customs officer you're talking to 2) What's the mood of that customs officer at that moment 3) What's YOUR mood at that moment 3) How well that customs officer know how much to tax for your item(s) 4) How much YOU know about how much SHOULD be taxed for your item(s) 5) How good you are in convincing that customs officer not to tax you more then he/she should 6) And about 20 million other factors which I won't list out, for obvious reasons

did a little research on the web. i recall Malaysian Customs once had an informative page but as with all govermenet websites, i don't know what's up with it now. anyway found it cached on Goolge here. it looks like (in print) that computer software and DVDs are not taxable. althought there is that weird part about Customs having to do some 'screening' of movies that are being brought in.

Yeah, in theory they have to screen dvds from overseas. But my orders have never been screened. Ridiculous rule. I've been ordering hundreds of dvds from Amazon for 5 years now. Most of the time no tax. Sometimes...once in a blue moon, I have to go to KLIA and pay the tax but usually no.
SW Collectibles....95% of the time kena tax in my experience.

The size of the package plays a big role in whether it gets detained or not...
