Hi, I thought I'd share some pics of my Darth Vader helmets, both completed and work-in-progress. Enjoy. First up is my Portumac ROTJ helmet. This is from a DP Deluxe cast but the dome has obviously been lengthened (DP Deluxe and Classic Action domes were mysteriously short in comparison with the screen used helmets). Painted with automotive paint for a very glossy, showroom-like finish. Here's the Portumac on my lifesize ROTJ Vader display (next to my Royal Guard): Next up is my recently completed project, my SPFX ANH helmet. I bought this is kit form from an RPF member. The facial features are very sharp. I wanted to make this look like the one Vader used when he boarded Tantive IV, battle worn and mean as hell. I sprayed the faceplate with Krylon Gloss Black and the dome was painted with Krylon Satin Black. Then I handbrushed the gunmetal highlights (just like they did on the set of ANH) and finished off the dome with some Turtlewax Rubbing Compound to give it the worn look. Finally I added amber lenses, tusks (the left one painted black) and grills. I have a set of older GT armor which I repainted the same style as the helmet for my ANH costume. Here's the SPFX ANH next to my Portumac ROTJ. As you can see, the ROTJ helmet looks a lot more pristine and glossy compared to the battle worn ANH. Finally, this is my next project, a Celtic Touch 20th Century ESB faceplate with an unknown dome, most probably a DP deluxe recast. Hope you all like!

Kalkamel,
Thanks for sharing the pics of your two great looking upgraded Darth Vader Helmets. I'll be looking forward to TROOP with you in your SPFX - ANH Darth Vader Helmet come 2nd and 3rd June 2007 when the 501st MALAYSIA-BRUNEI OUTPOST becomes the vanguard of the STAR WARS 30th Anniversary Celebrations at MOVIE CARNIVAL 2007.
I noticed that the amber tinted lenses you added still looks like a set of black lenses. Will it have the dark reddish appearance when you wear it

SO, I think it's the lighting. Up close it will look like dark amber. As I have said previously, dark amber was most probably used on the set of ANH, with the studio lighting plus the red-skinned face of Dave Prowse (due to the heat when wearing the costume) probably contributed to the red lenses theory.

I used Tamiya Gun Metal acrylic paint, product code is X-10 I think. It matches the paint on my Portumac very well.
