ah... fans. a hard bunch to please, aren't we ? i for one am not too quick to use the novelisation to back up any arguement, only because once facts are set straight by the movies, its canon. my opinion anyway. and besides, Lucas is The Maker. he can do whatever he likes. so, is Obi-Wan a liar ? well, it all depends on your, ahem, point of view now doesn't ? " Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view." - Ben Kenobi, ROTJ.

Edge has a point. if you think Ben's more of a lier in E3 than in E4, then you do. if you don't, you don't.
as for R2's "memory wipe" i think that yes he didn't know the whole story, but you gotta think that he'd figure things out that Anakin turned into Vader.

Edge has a point. if you think Ben's more of a lier in E3 than in E4, then you do. if you don't, you don't. I personally think there're just some things GL couldn't fix no matter how hard he tries. Just imagine how difficult it already is to tie everything back to the OT from EP 1 to EP3. In a novel or any other written accounts, all you need are words, nothing else. Like they say, "word is cheap", but making a movie is NOT cheap.
To set everything right might have required a plot so twisted and conplicated that in the end fans would go numb from trying to link everything together. It may also mean a budget 3 times as big and a movie twice as long. So somethings are just left as is, without being quantified. As for R2's "memory wipe" i think that yes he didn't know the whole story, but you gotta think that he'd figure things out that Anakin turned into Vader. Maybe R2 was not designed to 'comprehend' the way C3Po can. R2 is an Astromech droid, and its job is to navigate and assist the pilot, and as an on-board technician. R2 might not actually have the ability to see things and then relate the events to a third party. Also if you notice how little respect C3PO gave R2 in ANH, it may be true that even if R2 were to tell C3PO what happened, C3PO would not believe R2.

i for one am not too quick to use the novelisation to back up any arguement, only because once facts are set straight by the movies, its canon. Lol... unfortunately, George Lucas went and declared all the books as canon years before Ep. 1 came out. Actually, if you wanna blame anyone for the inconsistencies between the novels and the movies, should blame his research department or something... lol. Here's an example: I just finished re-reading the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. In one of the books, Mara Jade remarks to Luke Skywalker regarding the distruction of the first Death Star, "Vader nearly died for his blunder. That's where HE LOST HIS RIGHT HAND, in fact." Oops. ^_^

wow...very deep discussion indeed.
Is it possible that R2 didn't know that Luke was actually Anakin's son. Maybe he wasn't there when they decide to call the child Luke. When did R2 meet Luke at the first place? Was it not when Luke decided to be an X-wing pilot? Furthermore maybe its logic doesn't comprehend the possibility of Skywalker surname connection.
I am also going for the arguement that R2 is just an astromech. Therefore it focuses primarily on uts assigned duty and disregard such information regarding Anakin/Vader as unimportant.

R2 met Luke at Tattooine when Luke's Uncle decides to purchase some droids to replace the faulty ones they had.

R2 was on the asteroid, yes it's an asteroid, where Luke and Leia are born, but he wasn't actually there. remember soon after the birth, Bail took the two droids to Tantive IV and gave them to Antilles.

in ANH obiwan said to luke "obi wan kenobi, thats a name i havent use..ohh since before you were born" whats up with that? I'd imagine that once the jedi's were being hunted, he decided to change his name slightly, so as to not be recognised.
