I am curious cause as far as i know, no one except the Organa royal family, Obi wan, Anakin, Yoda, Polis Maasan and perhaps Captain Antilles know about the birth of the twins. I recalled reading somewhere that Red Leader was saying to Luke that his father was a great pilot. So it seems a lot more people knew the connection. And if it is true that a lot of people know about Luke being Anakin's son (or maybe they are just guessing that the two are somehow related due to the same surname), shouldn't there be some kind of discrimination towards Luke. (cause dang it...real people are like that) Bear with me, I am still a noob. ;D

Well, maybe Red Leader did see the surname, comes for Tatooine, so presumed Luke must be Anakin Skywalker's son, who was a great pilot during the Clone Wars. Probably very few actually know that Anakin Skywalker is Darth Vader... he was disfigured and placed in the armoured mask very soon after being named Darth Vader by Palpatine so the public doesn't know about it. So nothing here to discriminate...

haha..thanks...that cleared up much of the confusion that clouded my mind. there shouldn't be any discrimination towards Luke, heck! they would actually pay more respect to him due to the similarity of the surname!!!

And why didn't Obi1 ask the Lars' to change the boy's surname? What's the point of hiding him if he has the same surname as his father? Or is "Skywalker" a common name in the Outer Rim planets?

That' my friend, has been a hotly debated subject throughout the history of SW, in almost every forum/discussion board...
It is incredible that Anakin's son has been hiding in his own homeworld for 20 years, bearing his family name, brought up by Obi-Wan's brother, not very far from where Anakin and his mother were slaves of the Watoo, and not be found by the Imperial forces.
Only after ROTS can a logical explaination be offered. Firstly, the Skywalker name had to be common enough not to arouse suspision. Secondly, Anakin didn't know Padme actually gave birth before she died, therefore no one was looking...

Hey guys....
Just to share something. I collect Star Wars comics frm Dark Horse. And to really answer the question of whether anybody knows Luke's connection to Anakin, read the "EMPIRE" miniseries (about 30 issues if I can recall properly)....in some of the issues, Luke was really discriminated because of his Skywalker surname. He was attacked, cursed at and almost executed because of his ties with Anakin.
Well, I hope this helps.

Hey guys. I suspect, and this is just my isolated theorising, that Owen Lars named Luke after his father so that he wouldn't forget his father's name - I think most cultures put a lot of stock in the family surname. Plus they were simple moisture farmers, far removed from the daily intrigues of the Empire's evil machinations. Maybe they wanted to give the boy something to hold on to, to dream about. From what little we see of Bail Organa, he seemed like a bit of a pompous upper-class aristo-swine who would naturally name Leia after himself. Hah!

Lars Owen: Hey, Beru look. The kids pointing his legs to the sky again Beru: Oh, let's name him Skywalker then.
