People are all nervous in this day of uncertainty, when a terrorist act can happen without notice, especially after the recent Virginia Tech incident.
Not a good idea to carry anything that look like a weapon unless you're in the right setting...

Here is an extract of the response that was posted today in the 501st Legion forum by the Australian Star Wars costumer who was arrested on account of possessing an "automatic weapon",
"...On behalf of my partner & I, a humbled thank you to all who have voiced their support, opinion, or even criticism regarding my lapse in judgement.
Despite the best of intentions, things on the day just didnt work out. For me at least.
The press got a story on a relatively slow news day. The police were reacting to partial information, then kept up appearences to make a point to the public.
Their 'surrounding' presence also partly protected my identity until I was unluckily snapped whilst entering the police vehicle.
The police have been most understanding once our side of the story was explained.
I'm truly grateful for the support of the legion. I hope I haven't brought harm to the organisation's reputation or caused distress to any members of the public....."
The MORAL behind this incident is to properly conceal props esp. blasters that resemble weapons in the real world, when you are out of your costume and on your way to trooping or costumed photo shoot.

Agreed. This is a valuable lesson to all costumers, especially those who are new to the hobby and may not be aware of all the pitfalls.
In Malaysia it is doubly serious because being in possession of anything that looks like a firearm is an offence, and the owner can be arrested and charged under the ISA(Internal Security Act), which allows imprisonment without trial for up to 2 years.
Lets be extremely careful out there while on trooping duty.
