There's a huge debate at the Fanforce props and costuming forums about the 501st decision to disallow this costume. It's true that the 501st only admits fanmade costumes, but to deny admission to a fan who wants to be Vader with this costume takes the fun out of costuming. I've seen some 501st members whose costumes are far off on the accuracy scale... one of 'em is a member of the Sith Lords contingent and he's dressed as the Emperor with a cheapo robe and a Rubies latex mask which looks grossly horrible and still he's admitted! Another Vader wears a Don Post helmet with a black long sleeve t-shirt with a cape and an inner robe and he's still admitted!! And the 80% accurate Rubies Supreme costume is a no no?? How unfair is that?
Personally, if I were to get this costume, I'd line the cape with Satin, give the dome and the shin guards a glossy makeover with some automotive paint and voila! it should be admissible then.

Fair or not, its the perogative of the 501st what costume they want admitted to their private organisation. I have no comment about that but there're lodas of theories about the reason behind it...
Yes I believe once you modify this Vader costume somewhat, it effectively becomes a fan made costume and should be admitted...
yes I would line the cape & inner robe, change the pleated suit and the gloves to something like what our very own VaderArjay has, as the one that came with the costume look too vinyl, reinforce the chestbox(I read its very flimsy), or buy a better chestbox, and repaint the shinguard, shoulder armour and helmet.

Here's my list of modifications:
(a) Definitely the helmet dome, the chest armor and shin guards would look fantastic (and less plasticky) with a new coat of auto paint.
(b) The cape needs to be lined with satin... the inner robe no need lah... afterwards gets so hot!
(c) The gloves definitely HAS to go!
(d) The pleather jumpsuit looks good... SaberMaster, have you heard anything bad about it?
(e) The chestbox is ok... just need to substitute the rods with machined aluminium ones.
(f) The buckle needs to be changed to a metal one.
One all these changes have been made, it would no longer be a Rubies costume and I'm sure the 501st wouldn't reject it.

The best modification would be a pair of fans inside the helmet..and perhaps a cooling system inside the leather jumpsuit. Pheww..i can feel the heat just by lookin at it. wear it on a normal sunny malaysian day, n u will drown in your own sweat.

Yes, I can't imagine wearing ANY of the SW costumes apart from perhaps Leia's Slave Bikini outfit for the ladies(if not get booked for too scantily dressed!) outdoors, even at night!
I just wonder about "Darth", the "Stormtrooper", "Royal Guard", "TIE Pilot", do you have any modified ventilation/fans inside the helmet (somemore some got extra cloak, as if not warm enough!)?
Or can you helmet costumers breath ok thru the gaps and holes that are already part of the helmet?
I ask because if someone out there is considering to buy any helmet costume, need to consider this as well (potential time/cost issue)... (hope I'm not thread hijacking here...hehe)

(d) The pleather jumpsuit looks good... SaberMaster, have you heard anything bad about it? From what I understand its very thin, and prone to tearing. Also its too shine and looks very artificial...(e) The chestbox is ok... just need to substitute the rods with machined aluminium ones. The chestbox is quite a bit smaller then the one in the movie, and is very think, according to posts in TheForce.net forums...(f) The buckle needs to be changed to a metal one. Agreed, but in the meantime can paint it metallic silver and use first...

(hope I'm not thread hijacking here...hehe) I'm SO glad you asked that question CP. For your information, all the members with helmeted costumes in the MySciFiFan Costume Contingent were wearing special suits underneath with cooling coil sandwiched between the material, and a mini compressor on their belt pumping refrigirant through the coil. The suit comes complete with a hood so even the head is kept cool.
This suit was originally developed by the Pentagon for US soldiers in Kuwait during operation Desert Storm, and was only declassified last year. Now you can buy it freely on ebay, so we made a bulk order.
I have one spare, brand new suit. Kal has mentioned he's interested, but if he change his mind someone else can have it. So Kal, you still want it? ;D

Too bad, Nexus... I have already bought mine! ;D Cost me USD600!!! Almost the same price as the Rubies Vader suit!! But this one more canggih than yours... it keeps me cool even when I am engulfed in flames. I put the suit to the test the day I got it... I set up a HUGE-ASS bonfire at my backyard, doused with plenty of gasoline, wore the cooling suit and literally jumped into the fire! I stayed in there for almost a good hour, then I had to take out the garbage. But throughout the fiery experience, I remained cool! ;D
