Venue: TecAsia, 4th Floor, Low Yat Plaza Time: 1930 hrs What: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots launching! www.youtube.com/watch?v=02SIUaFXqI0www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3ksvWvob-QAs the concluding part to the highly-acclaimed Metal Gear series, MGS4 puts you in the combat boots of Old Snake with the scenario set in a Middle Eastern suburb. As the last of the Snake brothers (Liquid & Solidus) and rapidly aging due to the effects of the FoxDie virus (thus looking more like his biological father Naked Snake aka Big Boss), Snake must stop Liquid Ocelot's plans for a massive world-scale war at all costs. Assisting Snake on his mission are recurring characters such as old-flame Meryl Silverburgh, Johnny Sasaki, and Otacon piloting the Metal Gear Mk. II. Snake also packs a range of personal items such as the new sneaking suit codenamed "Octocamo" and the "Solid Eye", a monocular device which serves as binoculars and various image intensifiers found in the previous games. Doing away with the traditional cardboard box that is the trademark of all Metal Gear games, Snake now has a steel drum, which is able to deflect bullets and knock enemy soldiers over. On the downside, rolling around in it too much will lead to Snake being sick. MGS4 will also explain what happened in previous MGS games and how they are related to each other. Anyone going for the launching? It's the last of the series after a 4-year long wait and is ultimately the LAST of the Metal Gear canonical series. - James H. - "Time to wrap things up, Snake ol' buddy"

Went there yesterday to catch a glimpse of what's happening, arriving 10 minutes before the due launching time. I expected to see lotsa cool MGS4-related stuff and a big-time promo going on at the venue. Instead, for a worldwide game-launching event which has its roots spanning back 20 years ago, it was a pretty quiet affair. At best, their understanding of "game-launching" translates into a few pathetic posters stuck onto the nearby walls, 2 buntings, and MGS4 trailers looping endlessly on a few LCD monitors. No themactic setting, no game promoters in MGS4 BDUs (save for that 4 chicks in black singlets and camouflaged minishorts), no booths set up celebrating the series' 20th anniversary. Nothing. I've seen a kid's Halloween party that is better decorated than this. To rub salt into the wounds, there wasn't even a Snake cosplayer as part of the whole act! The last I remembered, when HALO 3 was launched a guy dressed as Master Chief was there to liven things up and get people into that Covenant ball-busting mood. This is Malaysia afterall, I guess.
The only crowded place was the awkward line of gamers, some still playing Portable Ops on their PSPs, who'd pre-ordered their copy via online and are now awaiting the official launching at 7.30pm as stated. I found a friend of mine (also hardcore MGS-er) waiting in the line since 10am. The game promoters cum crowd controllers were randomly placed around the area, dressed in green. All of them had the bored look on their faces, and when asked for information, they really didn't know nuts about it. I asked if there were freebies and posters and they were unable to answer me. I dunno, but I thought that such an event at least deserves to have goodies and merchandises made available to willing buyers. I mean, c'mon, how hard is it to have MGS4 t-shirts, posters and other stuffs to sell to fans?
7.30pm passed. No stealth action. Then 8pm. Still no sign of launching the game. The promoters that I talked to all had that "If you're not paying to buy that game I'm not entertaining your questions" sort of attitude. Is this the way to treat an MGS fan? Not only were a lot of them ill-equipped in their responses, but some of their answers were highly contradictory; one told me these people standing in line were just to get their freebies and not the actual game as it is not shipped here yet, while another promo guy told me the game was already here. So which is which then?
I asked if I could buy their posters. At least the poster. I don't have the console yet, but I would at least like to grab a poster so as not to go home empty-handed. Nope, no deal. Now this part I would forgive them as the deal stated was that you got a free poster with each copy of MGS4. Fair enough. But the earlier above mentioned points are simply UNFORGIVEABLE! Hello? This is MGS we're talking about. 20th anniversary? Solid Snake? Period.
8.15pm went past. Still no signs of launching. I asked around again, and was told that the time was readjusted to 10.30pm.
I left without looking back.
What a way to end the series' finale. By an IT store who successfully managed to screw things up with their inefficiency and lack of professionalism. Did Konami Japan give them the license to be the launching representative in Malaysia? If so, then I am truly disappointed that the company nary made an effort to truly create an MGS-esque atmosphere for the launching.
I suffered from Metal Gear Solid Deficiency Disorder the whole night. My throat felt dry, and I had trouble sleeping at night.
