I consider myself a Trekkie, aware of Star Trek since just before TMP, and becoming fully immersed by ST3. I was there for TNG debut. Got the official VHS pilot for DS9 before it was shown in the UK, where I was... Bought as many ancilliary books I could get my hands on. TNG Tech Manual. Star Trek Chronology. Klingon Dictionary. (Soon after I got engaged, then married, so I was pokai in terms of buying these things.) I absolutely loved the movie. It has enthusiasm and energy which had long been lacking under Rick Berman. Here's my review, cross-posted from my blog here. Also, I realized that the Scotty quote isn't said in full when I watched it the second time.

Well, if you're going in expecting the Star Trek you're familiar with, you're in for a big disappointment. But if you check your brain at the cineplex entrance and not put your hopes too high, you're gonna have a great time. I did the latter, because I have read on many ocassion where JJ admits that he's a more Star Wars guy rather than a Trekkie, so that would pretty much mean his movie would have a lot of style, plenty of effects, plenty of action but very little substance or message that made us love Star Trek in the first place. Sure, they were references to the original series, to Enterprise even, but these are more like name dropping rather than actual homages. But I loved the movie for what it is, a mindless popcorn action summer blockbuster.
