okay, we all know the prophesy and i have a theory on it. and here it is.
the Jedi believed that Anakin's the Choosen One up to the Empire. but was he the Choosen One? could the Choosen One really be Luke? remember the scene from ROTJ when Luke finally sees Anakin's face? "I can't leave you, i've got to save you." "You already have...Luke."
is Luke really the Choosen One who redeems Anakin from the Dark Side and balancing out the Force? or is the prophesy too deep even for Lucas to devolvp theories about?

I believe that Anakin is still the chosen one but the prophecy was interpreted in a direct manner.
If you notice, in the beginning, the Jedis was in abundance but the Sith was little. Then came Anakin/Darth Vader who help to reduce the Jedis and increase the Sith.
Finally only Anakin/Darth Vader has the strenght to overthrow (no pun intended) the Emperor and redeem himself. Thus reducing the Sith and putting the force back into balance because both the Jedis and the Sith are two sides of the same force.

Well, in the novelisation of Episode III, Master Yoda, Master Windu and Master Kenobi do have a discussion about the prophecy. It's the "Yoda flying to the star destroyer scene on the way to Kashyyk scene" only an extended one compared to the movie. In that they do reveal that the prophecy does point to Anakin as the chosen one but it doesn't really say whether he has to be a Jedi to fulfill this prophecy. Plus even Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious knows about this prophecy too. Plus we don't really know what "balance to the Force" really means.

it points to Anakin yes. but it doesn't say if he had to be a Jedi to fullfill it, what he's suppose to do, and how to do it, much less who's to help.

mayb that's why Yoda also said, "misinterpret the prophecy, they could?"...
but if you think abt it, there are so many caveats: 1. if Qui Gon had only followed Yoda's advise and not train the boy 2. if in ep4, had the imperial fleet destroyed the escaped pod 3. if the Sith had really gone after Obi Wan & Yoda to completely wipeout the Jedi's...
IF...

Does anyone know where the heck did this prophecy come from? If written thousands of years ago it might not even refer to Anakin/Vader specifically but a Chosen One from another era. Like Nostradamus prophecies darn vague...

based on a Q&A by George Lucas in the Star Wars official web page... Anakin finally fulfills the prophecy that he will destroy the Sith and bring balance to the Force. He killed the emperor and then he was redeemed from the dark side by his son and that destroyed the Sith.
