TITLE CARD: JOE FLANIGAN…ON THE ACCESSIBILITY OF STARGATE ATLANTIS
Our show is definitely designed for people who, if they've never tuned in, they can watch it, turn it on, it will make sense, and they don't need a lot of SciFi background. They don't need to be avid fans of one show to understand the other. We're fairly self-sustained.
TITLE CARD: JOE FLANIGAN…ON MAKING REFERENCES TO SG-1
We do make references to the other show, because, well, the physics of the show are such that we report to Stargate Command. And we're cut off from Stargate Command, so we say how much we miss Stargate Command, and Earth, and all those Earthly delights. But we don't miss the hierarchy. (Big grin.) Otherwise, we wouldn't be in charge.
TITLE CARD: JOE FLANIGAN…ON THE RISING WORLDWIDE POPULARITY OF THE SHOW
We really had in our best hopes -- we wanted to see the show build an audience so that it could kind of survive on its own. And it's surpassed our expectations. In fact -- yeah, we are, we're doing better than SG-1, which is kind of remarkable. Now, both shows have a life of their own; I think they can exist separately or together.
TITLE CARD: JOE FLANIGAN…ON THE SUCCESS BEHIND STARGATE ATLANTIS
It's an extremely well written show. The creators of this show created SG-1. They, in fact, have been waiting for years to launch Atlantis. And they even considered making it a feature film, and then they decided to make it a series. So, they put a lot of thought and effort into the universe of Stargate Atlantis, and the character development and everything else. And we've got a great cast. Everybody is a little off -- just off enough so that we're not in jail, but we are working as actors. (chuckles)
TITLE CARD: JOE FLANIGAN…ON WHAT TO EXPECT IN SEASON TWO
The show going a second, third or fourth season -- is that we're in Atlantis. If you can imagine -- somebody put it in this terms -- Martin Wood (director) put it in this terms -- if you can imagine Atlantis, the Lost City of Atlantis, and imagine -- Manhattan being completely abandoned, and exploring Manhattan, it would take you…years. A ton of time. That's literally what we're sitting on, is a place that is incredibly vast, full of all sorts of secrets, and what I think is going to be exciting -- is filling the city up and bringing it to life. And that's what's going to happen over the course of a few seasons, is that it's actually going to come to life. Other people are going to start inhabiting the City. And Atlantis serves an overall larger cosmic purpose, which we'll discover. So the life of Atlantis comes home.
