Here is a comparison pic of how the old BSG's Colonial Vipers (left) look in comparison with the new BSG's Viper Mk II fighters (right). It looks quite similar, except that the new ones have more curves than the old. Points of interest about the new ones: - They dont use energy weapons, they shoot with real bullets with tracers. Plus they also carry missiles and missile countermeasures.
- They maneuver like Babylon 5's Aurora Starfuries, using reaction control thrusters. (You can see the thrusters in the pic above, at the nose and the engine section)

Design still largely preserved.
Hey, how about a comparison with the Mark III Viper used occasionally. Also a comparison between old and new Galactica (more changes).

Perhaps you refer to the Viper Mark VII? I'll get to the Galactica comparison later, when I've compiled some pics. Perhaps even a character comparison thread, in the near future. (L-R) Viper Mark II (piloted by Starbuck), Viper Mark VII (Apollo), and the Raptor (Boomer)

Wonder what happened with Mark III to IV in between. Like skipping a few 'Enterprise'. Surely they could have dug some fighters newer than Mark II to use when the Cylons invaded.

WHAT?!! They even did AWAY with the Classic Colonial Viper design? Aww man that's terrible!! Oh no. The Mark IIs look almost the same as the TOS Vipers, as per this thread's original post. The weird looking Viper in the middle is the Mark VII which were mostly destroyed by the Cylons in the pilot movie, except for Apollo's. He was piloting his father's old Mark II at the time. The Raptor is a multi-purpose attack vehicle with a pilot, a electronic countermeasures operator and several passengers.

The Mark IIs were from the first Cylon war... hence the close similarities to the TOS Vipers. The Mark VIIs were the latest series of Vipers - unfortunately they were networked and Cylon can easily infiltrate and decomision networks. That lead to the easy destruction of Galactica's original Mark VIIs squadron in the pilot episode. As for the Raptor - i dont think it is a 'Multi-purpose attack vehicle. From what i've seen they're usually used for scouting missions (thanks to their own FTL drives) and assiting attack squadrons with their jamming capabilities.
