I went to KLCC to have a look and the line was long... And that makes me wonder. Are they true fans of John Williams music or are they just there because the admission is free?
Anyway, I didn't go since the line is too long. I hope those of you that went in enjoyed it.

Drat! I thought it would be sometime next week. Well, I guess I have to make my own orchestral performance then.

I attended the 6pm show yesterday after lining up since 1:30pm for the tickets. In a way it is true, as mentioned in the post above, that most of the people who came are not true John Williams' fans, neither are they fans of orchestral music. Most of them, the young Avril Lavigne/Linkin Park crowd I prefer to call them, probably just saw the long line and thought, what the heck, there's probably a prize at the end of the line. While there is a prize, its not what they thought it was and you end up seeing people giving away their free tickets after hours of queueing. Sad indeed... Anyway, on to the performance.
I'd attended a Kevin Field et al plays the soundtracks before in 2003 and three of the pieces performed then are in the selection yesterday, i.e. Theme from E.T., Schindler's List and Duel of the Fates. Having played concerts the whole day probably drained the energy from the members of the orchestra, so there were a few off keys (mostly from the brass section) but overall it was a good performance.
1. E.T. - Adventures on Earth
I was expecting Field to start with the 20th Century Fox fanfare as he did in 2003, but he went straight into his first track, which was the music for the last 10 or so minutes of E.T., covering the bike chase and E.T.'s subsequent departure. Aside from an off key brass note midway, it was an exhilirating performance, especially towards the end. A great start to the proceeding.
2. Raider's March
The best piece of the concert with consistent perfomance from all members. I got goosebumps when the low trumpets started... the whole thing sounded just like I heard it on the Raiders' soundtrack. Absolutely terrific. The cue into Marion's theme was flawless and the build back into the finale was memorable. Finally I got to hear this wonderful piece being played live.
3. Theme from Schindler's List
Field had played this in 2003 with a guest violinist, this time its with MPO's very own, who did an excellent job of emulating Perlman's haunting violin solo.
4. Hedwig's Theme
For the kids, the orchestra next played Hedwig's theme from Harry Potter. Before it was performed, Field asked members of the audience to make owl sounds to accompany the music. Of course once the familiar theme is played you can see kids across the room looking absolutely spellbound.
5. Jurassic Park
As I had guessed, the piece he chose was "Journey to the Island" which contained the most important cues of the score. To my dismay though, this piece was not up to par. Several parts had the tempo quickened (so as to save time, I suppose) and sounded dreadful. Too bad... coz I was looking forward to this piece.
6. Star Wars Main Theme
Finally... the moment everyone in there had been waiting for. The theme blared and everyone was all smiles... the memory of Episode III was still fresh. Of course, you wouldn't get Battl of Heroes here... this was the main theme from A New Hope. Second best piece of the evening, I'd say.
7. Princess Leia's Theme
I honestly don't know why Field chose this. I'd have preferred something more moving like Han and Leia from Empire, but this was acceptable, albeit some off key, again from the brass section.
8. Duel of the Fates
I suppose Field didn't really like doing Duel without a choral accompaniment. The last time he played it, in 2003, it was as an encore with no choir. So in a futile bid, he asked the audience yesterday to practice singing "Corra Matta... Corra Rattama..." but Malaysian audiences... sigh... no wonder our reality tv music programs totally suck with non-talented performers. Anyway, the orchestra again played Duel minus the choir, and it came up o... k... nothing to shout about. It's like doing Carmina Burana without the choir... not really a great way of ending the evening.
After that piece, the audience clapped for an encore but alas, the members were to tired so no encore. I was hoping for The Throne Room and Finale from ANH but I had to listen to it, not live, but in the car on my drive back.

I attended the 6pm show yesterday after lining up since 1:30pm for the tickets. I joined the queue @ 2:00pm, that would've placed you in front of me by about 20-30 people? ;D Really, are Malaysians that greedy? Simply joining a queue that they didn't know where / to what it would lead? WoW, must admit I didn't see anyone giving away the tixs after the long queue, but if you said it did happen... In their defense, I can probably attribute the unbelievable queue to the fact that it's the start of the school holidays, and it was held on Sunday afternoon.. it was perfectly timed to attract an astronomical-sized crowd Loved itReally loved itMy girlfriend loved it.. it was okay for me This one put a on my face This one brought back memories, flashback-ed to the scenes from the movie *dream* come true.. 'nuff said..still hypnotized from the earlier performance, so this one went by in a flash.. what kalkamel said.. it would've brought down the house had it been played with an accompanying choir..nevertheless, it was a stunning performance in its own right.. kept waiting & hoping to see Darth Maul himself jump out from the shadows (or the empty balcony seats)

WoW, must admit I didn't see anyone giving away the tixs after the long queue, but if you said it did happen... Yes, they ARE! I had a friend there around 4pm+ to try obtaining tickets but informed that all were allocated by then. But prior to the 6pm performance some people who didn't want their tickets anymore were giving them out! And the ticket counter might have had some standby releasing in the last 5-10min as well (for VVIPs perhaps)... Take note for future attempts. I also heard a few kids were in costume associated with Star Wars and Harry Potter No adults though.

Yes they are and I have seen it happen countless times during my days in Event Management. Mothers would even risk stepping on other people's children just to get a free balloon for their own kid...
And some people even have to nerve to say "Give me 2 lah, I don't want to have to line up again to get another one...you're giving them out free anyway mah..."
