I just recently got the extended edition of the 1980's Dune. It's about 3 hrs long vs. the 2 hrs cinema version. Apparently the director did not want to be associated with this extended version and removed his credit. The longer version is suppose to make more sense though haven't seen it yet. Maybe the CNY break will have opportunity to spend 3 hours on it (over all the other backlog of movies and series I have to catch-up on).
Also understand there were 2 Dune mini-series. Watched the first one which I thought was a bit slow and somewhat mirrored the movie so skipped watching the sequel series. Issit worth the 4-5 hours?

Kekekeke... yeah, I know some countries have better advantages when it comes to directors cut. Same applies to "Kill Bill". The U.S. version of Kill Bill Volume One was a normal version on DVD but the Japan version of Kill Bill Volume One was an extended cut version. Interesting...

Yeah... Lets do it, but affraid no one will come & join us as they're still at hometown celebrating CNY. Well, I wasn't suggesting it as a MySciFiFan event, just me-self in front of TV over 3 hours whenever I've got nothing else to do. Welcome to join but it'll be quite ad-hoc arrangement. Otherwise we could do this for the Dune fans a few weeks from now, maybe late-March or April. Are there any significant Dune fans around?

Just watched the first 30 min. Rather slow moving start with a new Prologue narrating some history to the Dune universe using rather dull looking still-pictures. Then it moves to a scene with the Emperor being visited by the Space Guild and on to the Antriedes homeworld prior to them leaving for Dune. Left it at there for another day since don't have 3 hours to set aside.
Compared to current special effects, the movie feels somewhat B-grade having been spoilt by recent blockbuster. Though in those days 20 years ago (yes, that long), I believe Dune had top-notch special effects filmed over a budget in those days which rivalled Titanic (especially for a sci-fi - must be Episode VI hyped in 1983). Don't know what are the new scenes since it's been way long since I've seen the 2-hour cinema version. Seems a huge waste of movie though to have originally spent an extra hour of filming (actors, props, special effects) to then have to chop; sure sure they did not plan for extended editions in those days unlike LOTR today.
Anyway, if the Dune fans want to make themselves known, maybe will arrange for a small screening someday.
BTW, anyone seen the newer Children of Dune sequal? Looking to borrow it.
