What are your nominations for the top 5 sci-fi movies ever?
Perhaps MySciFiFan could arrange screening events one day.

Of course SW is my all time fav series of Sci fi movies, but other than Star Wars and Trek, I'd have to say: 1) Aliens 2) Terminator 2 3) Alien 4) Planet Of The Apes (original) 5) Titan A.E.

My vote 1. Empire strikes back 2. Dune 3. 2001(tho could make ya very sleepy at times) 4. Mad Max 5. Blade Runner I don't think Mad Max qualify as a sci-fi movie right? Sure the car's cool and can do fantastic things, but it’s not a spaceship and it doesn’t travel through time or anything. Heck it doesn't even fire missiles!
It’s just about a testosterone pumped guy with his equally testosterone (in mechanical terms) pumped car, living out the American version of freedom, liberty and justice. ;D
'Mad Max: Beyond Thunder Dome' is sort of futuristic (in those days), but it’s still not sci-fi either...

SaberMaster..Tho I am incline to agree with you...I would also beg to differ..I mean..my reasoning is that..it was somewhat a post-nuclear war event (if I'm not mistaken) on Mad Max...so..it was kinda like..old tech with some old science stuff...but you have a point that it is not really a full Sci-fi movie..in this case I think Escape from New York and LA would be better suited rather than Mad Max.. ...change of vaot...Mad Max's place taken over by Back to the Future 2.. my Fav of the 3 bBack to the Future

Hmm, I generally disagree with many of titles listed above. Mainly due to the fact that many supposed sci-fi movies like Pitch Black were merely commercial product with thin plot weak cast and directing etc.
Pardon me for saying this but I thought the more we watch then probably our choices would be different then. And also I notice that many of the titles are actually commercially successful franchises like T1-3, Aliens series, SW series etc. I think they all have eye-popping special effects but plot wise they are not the best. There are many other sci-fi movies on a smaller budget but with good plot/story/directing/acting etc that deserves to be in the top.
I don't have my list of my choices cos its hard to decide. Here are a few that I highly recommend: Cypher (2002) Donnie Darko (2001) S1m0ne (2002)

Here are a few that I highly recommend: Cypher (2002) Donnie Darko (2001) S1m0ne (2002) Wowowow... Pitch Black as it started off wasn't even a big budget movie even. It was a small budget film that has a cult following that later being brought up by fans whom loved the movie. That movie was a cult hit. The plot maybe thin, but its not exactly bad either. I'm not sure about Cypher but talking about S1mOne, that is not really a good movie but rather been made before by another movie which has lesser special effects entitled "Electric Blue". Do anyone remember this movie (and no, its not a Debbie Gibson song either). Its another a man that create this computer that falls in love with him but later sacrifice itself for the world cause. S1mOne maybe different in regards of creating a virtual person to be splash all over in the real world but the theme is the same. Donnie Darko on the other hand is unique and yet disturbing. The sci-fi element is rather little but it touches upon it in regards of time travel. I'm sure the director's cut version are much more explainable even since certain elements many fans are not sure what happen in the end of the film. Terminator started off as a low budget film. Brought up by a cult following of fans whom loved the movie. Its only T-3 suck badly with bad plot thanks to a new director and writer instead of James Cameron vision as ended in T2. Same goes for Alien as well but only the sequels were bad. But the main point was - these movies that are now commercialize all over the world started off with smaller budget... so you can't say its because of eye popping effects that made these films not worthy. Really disagree with you... Another good movie - Planet of the Apes (also started off as a low budget movie - the Charlton Heston original version).
