Anyone here interested to do up a Narnia costume for Christmas? I am trying to round up a few interested folks. Tentatively, I have Peter and Edmund in full armour, Peter/Edmund in coronation robe and Susan in green hunter/battle dress. Anyone want to come in a Lion suit??!!?? A tad more than 6 months for you guys to decide. And more pics should be forthcoming in the official website and fansites to help you with your decision making. This site is particularly handy - costumes.narniaweb.comCheers!

I'm game if the exact dats(s) can be decided waaaay in advance so I can book cheap flights from Air Asia. Can someone volunteer to pick me up and send me to the airport? I'll pay for petrol & toll.
Can I be in full armour as well? Or can there only be one person in full armour? Anyone going as the wardrobe? he he he
I don't mind paying for it if the armour can be made of sheet metal. Always wanted a suit of armour to display in my throne room [/color] ;D

*laughs* Unfortunately, I am not a (battle-ready) plate-armour maker... I simply don't have the tools raw materials and the sheer amount of investment needed to start my own forge. What I do make are maille items and basic leatherwork. Once I grab that lightweight metal shear I always wanted, I can start work on the light/costume sheet metal armour. There is a chap I know of in Sabah, who is in my group and does do a few odd pieces of plate armour every now and then. Maybe you might be interested to contact him and get a quotation? Technically there are only two humans in armour in that particular show... personally, I LOVE to have more folks in armour. And if they are battle worthy armour... *grins evilly* we can have a SCA-style battle to either wow the crowd or send them running screaming in fear. hehehe.

Once I grab that lightweight metal shear I always wanted, I can start work on the light/costume sheet metal armour. How much does this metal shear cost? Can't be THAT much right? There is a chap I know of in Sabah, who is in my group and does do a few odd pieces of plate armour every now and then. Maybe you might be interested to contact him and get a quotation? Could he be at a place call Tamparuli or Kota Marudu? I've heard of someone like that here but couldn't find out his exact location, let alone contact number. Do furnish me with his name, address and phone number and I shall seek him out this week as I'm on holioday(school's out). Looks like I'll get my suit of srmour after all! Hmmm...wondr if he's skillful enough to make the Witch King's armour from LOTR...Technically there are only two humans in armour in that particular show... personally, I LOVE to have more folks in armour. And if they are battle worthy armour... *grins evilly* we can have a SCA-style battle to either wow the crowd or send them running screaming in fear. hehehe. Well reserve one of those positions for me. I'll even buy or make a full size sword to go with the costume. I actually am more interested in collecting Medieval weaponry, ever since I saw some guys in full armour in a university campus in Toronto going at each other with their long swords. But since our powers-to-be do not tolerate such indulgences I started collecting lightsabers instead...

The cheapo chinese shear? It is retailing at just under RM500. But I personally think the maximum gauge you can cut comfortably for mild steel is around 18ga which is still technically costume grade. I don't care what the salesperson say... the chinese shear is still way too lightweight to go through what I have in mind. If I can get a bunch of spare blades, might consider trying on a sheet of 16ga, which is really the bare requirement of basic combat ready plate. I'd rather poke my eye out with a sthingy than to even think of trying on 14ga (minimum combat ready helmet grade) with it... the sthingy is probably a cleaner death for me, rather than slowly picking pieces of a broken blade from my then badly lacerated face, and swearing in half a dozen languages That I haven't gotten it yet was because the place that sold it was soooo awful far from me... I don't drive. And the fact that I have been saving up for a pig-faced/hound skull bascinet from my favourite armoursmith in Australia. I buy whatever I can't make. *looks guilty* The one I have my eyes on but don't think can afford is a Beverly Throatless Shear B2, retailing at under USD700 for a new one and USD400 for a secondhand, which isn't really the problem. The problem is... that shear is easily 18-20lbs and you can only get it from the States. Can you imagine the S&H cost on that baby?? And then the additional blades. When you are metal-working, you definately will wear out the blades like mad. So, I will just turn green with jealousy every now and then. Am using an angle grinder for metal work now... don't really like it. Creates so many wretched burrs I have to spend hours grinding off! For precise cutting, you can't escape using a throatless shear (cheapest of the lot, and nigh soundless), ace-oxy torch, plasma cutter and all the way to laser, baby! I LOVE those SCA and Reenactment groups!! Mine were Australian based. From a mere history buff, they got me sooo hooked to arms and armour now! *looks wry* I got my one and a half hander consficated by our most diligent beloved Customs. And that wasn't even battle-ready but merely decorative!! GRRR!! Thank goodness, I sold the remaining 2 blades (these ARE battle-ready and I was too nervous to send them back. Thanks goodness for nerves!) before I came back... I don't think I could stand the heartbreak of watching them taking my babies away. *sniff* Imlardis and I are working on our armour together if all goes well. I'll help him with his butted maille since I think I am one of the few people crazy enough to actually do Dark Ages stuff when most people go for the 'easier' and less repetitive plate armour. Join us! Then we can all pregnant dog how we broke our cutting pliers for the 12th time that month and how a wound wire uncoiled suddenly slapped us across the face, leaving a scar Anakin will be proud of. Tried to get ladies interested but I don't think they share the same masochistic tendencies I have! I know you have been working with metals when you were making your lightsabers... mostly 20-18ga stainless right? Or is that coated copper? I don't have his actual address (I never thought to really ask!) but I'll PM you his email addy.

Wow, you're a lot more adept at metal work then me.
My metal working experience so far has been limited. Mostly cutting up tubes with a hacksaw and hand sanding off the burr with a metal file. Now that I have a mini grinder things should be a lot easier.
Am seriously thinking about investing in a plasma torch as not only can it cut, it can also weld, although it takes a LOT of practice to get it right. But I have even worse problem then you coz no on here even sells it! The only guy in town I know who has one refuse to cut anything that remotely resemble a weapon for me for fear of being implicated should the weapon be found embedded in someone's head...
Yes do pass me this guy'semail. Hopefully he's willing to pass on some of his skills to me. It'd be great if he'd allow me to work on the armour together with him.
I read in the papers ever so oftenthat the art of blacksmithing is fast disappearing here because today's youth are just not interested because it's labour intensive. If only they knew how much money you can make if you use the skill to make armour pieces and export them.
Looking forward to getting your friend's email address.

Wow, you're a lot more adept at metal work then me. Hehehehe, I am more like a 16 year old who managed to sneak out her parents' car keys. I may not know entirely what I am doing but I am determined to get the car started and moving somehow. In reverse or forward, doesn't really matter. It is a learning process... punctuated with the occassional screams, colourful swear words and cheers of satisfaction. I'm slowly trying new tools and methods until I get the right combo I am comfy with. Do you happen to know just how much an ARC plasma cutter cost? Really curious... it is something I can't ever afford on my pathetic pay but no harm lusting for it! I know the smallest models weighs around 70kg with the heavy duty models topping a whopping 250kg. Will need a generator to pump the air supply in too. S&H WILL be hell!!! Unless it is one of those mini plasma cutters. Hmmm... What a nong. The blade blank and tang aren't that identifiable once you have mod it enough. No one will be that silly as to walk around with a blank around... it is just a hunk of steel - much more slimmer and elegant than your typical baseball bat but essentially the same crude ability. If you sharpen the business end of it... even harder to identify it! I don't think our CSI are THAT adept. hehehe. But yeah, I do understand his concerns... I mean I would hate it if I make blades and some random nut job just grabbed one and hurt someone with it. Oddly enough... they sell awful BIG machetes in hardware stores freely... those that could possibly lop off someone's head and not a single peep from the coppers. It's perfectly legal! But bring in a costume/decorative sword through KLIA... massive hysteria about criminal elements destabilising something. *looks sour* At least some people are benefitting from it by hiking the prices of their products up even for relatively low quality items. Even Singapore is not so uptight about the whole thing for crying out loud. But I am digressing... Blacksmithing is one of the more thankless task. Yes, with modern equipment, things are less horrid now but not many younglings want to sit in front of a hot forge, hitting a chunk of red hot metal over and over again until their backs feel like breaking. The money is not really that good either. Little town blacksmiths may still do nails, farming/mining equipment and repairwork, larger town blacksmiths tend to do cast iron work... VERY rare to see a bladesmith unless you live somewhere near Kelantan or Kedah with their famous keris-makers. Armoursmith... actually, I haven't heard of any yet. India is doing a roaring business of shipping cheap, low quality armour to the States. And those people are snapping it up like mad! It may not look very good or authentic but it is functional if you pad it up real good. *grins slyly* It is almost like the Hasbro lightsabers... you know the FX ones are more realistic but you don't necessarily want to whack those around when there is cheaper plastic alternative around. Why don't you start a forge, Pol? Lightsabers and b*stard swords hanging side by side.

I don't think you're threadjacking...this IS ' Costumes, Props and Replicas' and you did start this thread to ask if anyone wants to go in character. Were better to discuss how the costumes should be made?
If someone should post and say he/she want to go as the wardrobe, the next logical question would most definitely be "so how are we gonna make a wearable wardrobe?". And that'll naturally lead into a loooong line of technical and trouble shooting posts... ;D

Couldn't we just plonk any old wardrobe on the poor critter? We'll remove the clothes and drawers and replace it plywood/foamboard fakes... make sure the key holes are large enough to peer through... holes in the wardrobe so he/she can move around. And a crane to lift em around... don't think anyone here is strong enough to move a 100-150lbs wardrobe without aid. Though we were notorious for snagging supermarket trolleys at MV?? Think again. Would be most amusing to say the least. *eg* I'll try very hard to look sympathetic whenever a mournful noise come out of the wardrobe begging, "Would someone please, please get me out of here?!" Actually would be good if someone can somehow find a somewhat regal lion costume. Ability to strut and look majestic is a must. Then ability to bear with younglings squealing and rushing in to take piccies with the 'adorable' lion without snapping ala Anakin.
