There's a way around that is... By not being a fanboy, by only getting fan made props. Fan made props are much better quality, a lot more durable, more detailed, and much more screen accurate. The fans actually take the time to study the screen used prop when replicating it. Take for example, the Obi ANH saber. MR's weathered/AFBB versions pale in comparison to the version sold by Romans Empire. Roman tailored each part of his saber based on the screen used parts; ANM2 booster, 3 MK1 grenade, real Graflex clamp, AS handwheel etc. Way more screen accurate than a licenced product. Screen-used: Roman's: MR's - check out the lazy weathering on the emitter: Another example is the MR Luke ROTJ Force FX. With its fat neck, it pales in comparison to Parksabers' version which not only has a detachable blade, but has a slimmer, more screen accurate neck. Screen used prop: Parks: MR's FX:

I feel I need to interject here...fan made props are not for EVERYONE. They're hard to come by to begin with. Due to the huge effort invested by the prop makers, and their usually high standard in getting every detail right, there's usually a long waiting list.
Price is another factor. One of Roman Empire's Obi Wan ANH saber costs as much as an MR piece. And if you get the new, more accurate booster from Serafino, that alone is almost USD100. Some feel that the prices for unlicensed prop is not justified, but the quality is way way better then any licensed, mass produced prop can every match...

OK, back on track... I pre-ordered these DVDs on Amazon back in June so mine should be arriving soon. Despite the fact that these are non-anamorphic and Dolby 2.0 stereo, they are limited editions. It has taken years of petitioning by fans for Lucas to release these originals on DVD and from his disdain for the originals, I somehow doubt if he'll ever release them again in any format. The mega collection coming out next year will only feature the 2004 editions of the OT with even more changes so this may be the only opportunity for us to own the OT in its pure unadulterated form.

Hi there. I just want to point out that these original versions distributed in malaysia are bugged and sloppy. The UNALTERED movie is on the Bonus disc.
I bought mine at speedy video. The bonus disc was crappy compressed. Low quality compression. And to make matters worse, the scene selection screen is buggy meaning it doesn't appear but only appears after you try to exit the menu selection.
I think if you all want to buy, better wait for BlueRay. The DVD just isn't good.
If you're saying they couldn't give us a cleaner Original 'Star Wars' movie, well I have a 1937 The Wizard of Oz that looks better than the stupid bonus disc low res compression. And the movie GL keeps refering to in the commentary '2001' I have that too. It was way back in 1960s, a lot older than Star Wars, but the DVD has clean images.
So beware guys.

Hence I never bothered getting them since I own the original LD Set.

Starlander, if you mean the picture quality on the original unaltered movies are not as good as the Special Edition versions, that's because the originals were direct rips from the laserdisc version. Lucas was so adamant not to release the originals on DVD but fan pressure finally cracked him. But he did it with such contempt, i.e. not even remastering them with the proper DVD compression codecs. Basically what he did was take the laserdisc release (this was before the 1996 Special Editions), ripped them movies and burn them onto the DVD discs. Hence the crappy compression quality and the 2.0 audio.
And don't expect Lucas to release the originals on Blu-ray either. You'd only get the 2004 Special Editions... the crap with young Anakin at the end of ROTJ instead of Sebastian Shaw.

Thanks for the info guys. I hate lucas even more. I did that pic to show what I mean. But seriously, I don't care if the original is not remastered. It's amazing how such a huge film like star wars couldn't be preserved well. I think Lucas threw all the original reels. Maybe the original reels were used as fuel to burn Vader in ROTJ If the DVD is a rip from the LD I bet the BluRay, if it does happen, will be a rip from the DVD
