That depends. I have 3 green laser generators (2 feet in lenght) in my office but they do not need any water to cool down. They are of the solid crystal type. The other type that probably may need water would be the quantum laser, chemical laser or those that are used for cutting metals. Yes I ws referring to the quantum lasers, they're the only ones that can generate enough energy to be used as a weapon.
Solid state crystal lasers are very low wattage lasers which are used primarily for special effects, instrument calibration or measurement purpses. There is no need for any shutter to start or stop raw light and or any need for focusing prism as laser beam travels in a straight path. If memory serves, I remember my physics lecturer mention that laser beam is created by focusing raw light through certain crystals and prosms/lens, so the only way to tuen the laser on and off without turning off the light source completely is to prevent the raw light from hitting the crystals/prism/lens, thus the need for a shutter. Maybe laser technology today has advanced beyong this method, as my information is decades old...

So does this mean that it is a scientific possibility of using crystals to make these "laser swords"? unfortunately, no. laser travel infinitely, like any light source would, so there's no way to make it stop 3 ft or so away from the generator, even if you can make a really small quantum laser generator that can fit intothe palm of your hand...
Plasma blade on the other hand, is a totally disfferent matter...

Yes. Crystals can be use to make laser but as a form of light, it will go on forever unless you have a mirror station at 3 feet away.
Furthermore, since it is a form of light, you can't see it from sideways like in the movie unless you can diffuse it. For example, having lots of smoke around.
Plasma would be more likely as it is composed of highly heated gas particles which will glow on its own. Only thing is to contained that heated plasma in a saber hilt without meltdown!

So anyone watch the 3 Documentaries on Discovery Channel on Sun or Mon Morning? I watch certain parts and found it dry in a way. Keep having the urge to switch channel when I'm suppose to enjoy documentaries like it that explain sciences. Think I found the 2-Part Documentary on Lucas shown on Singapore TV last week more interesting and attractive than these.

you can;t make a sword or any kind out of light, simply because light particles hold no "electrical charges" whatsover. light is actually made up of photons which has very tiny minuscle mass or almost no mass i think...
so you can't bend it not shape it (let alone get it to cut something), unless you happen to have a black hole in your pocket! ;D
or if you can find a way to bend the wave properties of light...

You are wrong there.
Light can cut if it is sufficiently concentrated like laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emmision of Radiation). The only fallback here is the larged amount of energy being used to create it like the industrial cutting laser for steel bars. The other would be the amount of heat generated.
Light can be bend by using mirrors, lenses, prisms, water in a clear tank, etc...

Yes I managed to catch it, but ws dozing off during the last part coz its late and also coz it was boring...
You're right, its very dry, and most of what was shown is nothing new. I've seen most of the technology in previous documentaries before, including the NASA built 'Boba Fett' lookalike astrobot.
And I was real bumped cos there was no mention of Lightsaber technology! ;D

Managed to catch few minutes of it. Lucas did a very interesting note on the Jedi concept. The force concept really works. I just wish that he manage to explain more of how Buddhism influence in them.
