ok what the heck.. this is an entry from my blog of my rumblings about this topic :
I confess. I am crazy about Star Wars. I can identify the exact model name of Han Solo's Millennium Falcon - which is a YT-1300 Corellian freighter. I can also identify the manufacturer of the Imperial-class Star Destroyer - which is the Kuat Drive Yards.
I also confess. I like science fiction. I like it a lot. I can explain that the Aurora Starfuries from Babylon 5 were probably the first to introduce the concept of vectored thrust in TV science fiction. I can also identify the ship class of the NCC1701-E USS Enterprise - which is a Sovereign-class Federation starship capable of a maximum of Warp 9.9.
Therefore, by all stereotype and ill-conceived perceptions, I am a geek. I am capable of spewing techno-babble and quoting strange corny-sounding lines from sci-fi series or movies. I see another spacecraft on TV and I get all excited for another potential sci-fi series to follow.
(Yet strangely though, I have hardly any interest in the current development of space travel and astronomy, probably because I am quite convinced, at this point, that we will never achieve faster-than-light (FTL) space travel, nor will we ever encounter another sentient species. Let NASA or SETI prove me wrong if they will one day.)
So, a geek am I. Some humourous name-callings I (and fellow fans) sometimes receive are Star Wars freaks, nerd, geeks etc. I laughed with them (some whom are friends as well) and join in my own self-mockery. Besides, a person who cannot laugh at his own self certainly would have issues. So I proudly proclaim in the midst of my friends myself as a freak/geek. If anyone should remember, I took that to the next level by appearing in costume for Star Wars-related screening events recently. If I was not labelled a geek before this, that move would have stamped a "Certified 100% Satisfaction-or-Money-Back-Guaranteed Freak" seal on my forehead.
Now, jokes and jeers aside. How does one define a Star Wars geek or any other geek for that matter ? Is it because we watch Star Wars, Star Trek or other sci-fi ? Is the common perception towards "geeks" is that they are spectacled (no offence to those who are), lives at with their parents, have no friends or social life, and will probably never have sex ever in their lives ? I disagree about the wearing spectacles part.
But why do we get pinned with those names ? Not all of us are actually intellectually smart. I myself was no grade A student in university (again, no disrespect to those who are). We are just a group of people who have a great interest and passion in this sort of fiction. When someone watches soap opera series like an endless addiction - are they called any demeaning names ? If someone follows football as if their lives depended on it, do they get called "freaks" ? Those who take an interest in cars and motor sport - what names are they called. Not "freaks" or "geeks", so I hear. And hardly, if ever.
One watches the likes of The OC, One Tree Hill or Desperate Housewives (which I do watch and have pledged to follow from now on after the pilot episode), and nobody has anything to say about followers of those series. Yes, human relationships are always complex and engaging issues to explore, I disagree not. But is sci-fi devoid of these elements as well ? I see the Star Wars saga as a whole and see the message of human fall and redemption. I see Star Trek and I see the optimism and a hope for a better humanity (something which seems further and further from achieving each day). I see Babylon 5 and I see the modern day struggles of politics and maintaining peace in the midst of conflicts. And within this vast sea of engaging plotlines are characters (human or otherwise) that are just as flawed, just as resolved and just as related to us.
Deep-thinking personal philosophical babble aside, fellow sci-fi fans I have meet are just kooky, friendly, helpful and passionate about the things they do. No average person would write off hours of their off-working schedule to plan, organise and attend sci-fi related events. Heck, recently they even appeared in costume to provide publicity for a charity event. Raising awareness, anyone ? So just think of us as nice people with extreme hobbies.
But if all else fails, then by all means, call me a geek. I embrace it. It is also all just darn freaking fun.

Geeks and nerds are words use by non-fans to describe the fans. Doesn't matter what they are a fan of. If they're obsessed with a particular brand of entertainment, they will be described as geeks and/or nerds.
I'm a SW geek and I'm proud of it!

Ok. Thanks for that detailed answer The Edge. Once again you've outdone yourself but that still doesn't answer my question. What is Leet?

do refer to Hisham's reply and the link he provided ? speaking of l337, anyone remembers the l337 subtitled Star Wars Episode III trailer ? it r0xX ! the (un)official page is here, but no video because Lucasfilm sent him legal letters, which he l337 translated for our reading pleasure. the video can be downloaded here. thanks to fellow member onions for making it known to me in the first place. btw, my long post was just my ramblings about the whole being a nerd/geek/freak issue.
