This isn't meant to be a critism or an insult to this web site and or to every Science Fiction and fantasy fans out there, but I would just like to see what you all think of this and would be glad to here your opinion, as we are often refer to as nerds or geeks.
Are Science fiction and fantasy fans considered as nerds and/or geeks?

I'd prefer the term nerd/geek to be replaced with 1337 #@xx0r5!!! Hahahaahaa!! Heh..heh...heh...Sorry. Just got a 'lil carried away there. Heh... ;D For the uninitiated...the term above in bold red is what the net/tech savy 'nerdz/geekz' refer to as leet speak. Anyway...to me, I think the term nerds/geeks today is just relative. It's not as clear cut or defined as what is usually pictured back in the late 70's and throughout the 80's where the term nerd would automatically be embodied by a person who is frail in body, with thick-framed glasses, poor dress sense, socially unpopular, brainy and play dungeons & dragons in his/her parents' basement. Lets take video games for an example. Initially it was considered a form of entertainment only played and understood by the denizens of geekdom. But look at the state of gaming nowadays...it's one of the biggest entertainment industry in the world - valued at over 5 billion dollars a year and everyone is trying to get their hands in what previously was considered a nerd's form of entertainment. I mean just look at the game developers nowadays, the person who slaves behind codes and programming language in front of their PCs, toiling away into the wee hours of the nights...they're now treated like rockstars and some of them even live like one. Then again...what would I know. Back when I was in school, I never got the nerd/geek moniker. People just fondly referred to me as freak. But you know what? I liked it. I was a freak on my own terms. I was pretty content in my own skin. I never felt the need to be cool or get into the 'in' things like everyone else. I guess being a sheep just doesn't seem like something cool to me. And now that I can afford it, I'm indulging myself on all (well, not exactly all...mostly what I can afford ) things Star Wars and PC building/gaming. If by doing and enjoying these things makes me a nerd/geek...so be it. It's fine with me. Just my long and winded 2 cents on the topic. ;D

I have no qualms about being a geek. As everyone is finding out little by little, geeks end up ruling the planet. Those who mock them end up pumping gas at the gas station for life.

Yeah I was more of a FREAK then a NERD/GEEK as well during my school days, and a WEIRDO during college days ;D
I only became cool and popular when I started working as a DJ in a Disco after finishing college. But even then I didn’t really fit in because I don’t drink (and still don’t), and don’t care much for the fast-lane lifestyle of my fellow DJs…so I remained sort of an outcast, while being the centre of attention while I’m up there spinning the latest hits that moves the dance floor…
Even when I started working in an office environment later I still didn’t quite fit in, because I like to do things my colleagues have no interest in. Instead of hanging out in pubs and clubs and drink myself half-blind, I’d rather stay at home and restore old furniture, or look for old, discarded stuff that I can recycled into something useful for my house…
Now I own my own business and I still don’t fit in. I do not mingle with people I deal with, except in a strictly professional capacity. Instead of calling up my friends and going for a drink or a game of soccer, I communicate with them online, like what I’m doing right now.
So maybe I’m a NERD/GEEK…big deal…I’m living life and loving it!
The richest man on earth right now is not a King, a Sultan, a shipping tycoon, a timber tycoon, or a real estate broker. He is a GEEK!

I don't fall into any of this category - nerd, geek, dork and etc.
But what were ascribed to me is STRANGE, BIZZARE and the UNEXPECTED. Sounds like Ripley's Believe it or nuts!
What I liked the best was to called as the LONE WOLF, which I kinda took the liking to ;D

Nerdiness, Geekiness and Dorkiness is only a point of view, at least that is how Chancellor Palpatine would put it. And from my point of view, being a NGD helps take you out of the dullness of real life. What's important though, is having a set of fellow NGDs to interact with so you don't feel excluded! Know what we need? NGD Pride Parades. All fandom fanatics, bespectacled folk, computer folk etc. go out and show the world it is not a bad thing to be an NGD. Wait, can the Costumed Contingent be considered a NGD pride parade? ;D How many people make their own props and costumes out there after all?

Hmmm...if it is then a lot of non-NGDs would have loved to be in our midsts considering all the pretty ladies who come up to ask if they can have their picture taken with us...
We were definitely the most photographed bunch everywhere we go...even the celebrities can not match our popularity...in fact even the celebrities want to pose holding our lightsaber...he he he ;D

I'm not surprised that the MySciFiFan STAR WARS Costumed Contingent are going to be crowd pullers when we make our presence felt in the Singapore Science Center. Other visitors might consider some of us as "walking STAR WARS props and exhibits" and flock to us. But ha-ha they may not be able to take photos of us walking STAR WARS "props" though ;D [/b][/color]
