Fables, a comic series from Vertigo Comics ( a sub of DC ) written by Bill Willingham and has won Best New Series in the 2003 Will Eisner Comic Industry award.
It's basically in this alternate reality that the fairy tales we read about are real and they have been exiled from their homeland. it would seem these tales aren't as innocent as they seem. for instance, Prince Charming is actually the same husband of Snow White, Briar Rose ( of Sleeping Beauty ) and Cinderella. of course, he's divorced all of them by now. Bigby Wolf ( the same big bad wolf from Little Red Riding Hood and 3 Little Pigs ) is the feral shapeshifiting (reminds me of Wolverine) sheriff of Fabletown. so, is that interesting enough ?

Sounds much like what the Shrek movies did.

well, in certain ways like Shrek, Fables does parodies of the fairy tale characters. but instead of making them funny and amusing, they turn out to be like us, plague with problems and issues.

A bit off topic, but this story reminds me of a mini series I watched on TV sometime ago call '10th Kingdom', where all our fairy tales are real...wonder if there's any connection in terms of writer, producer etc...

Know nothing about 10th Kingdom, so I can't really compare the two. Do think Fables is truly unique and stands out amongst the comics that's in the market today It's different than, say Shrek cause it takes popular fairytale characters (and some really obscure ones, I mean for me I had no clue who Baba Yaga was, now I do and posits the question "What if they were to exist in present day New York?". Bill Willingham is really hitting his stride on the title, and the art is fairly consistent, thanks to the pencils of Mark Buckingham. Spoilers follow:-I've been reading the trade paperbacks (readily available @ Kinokuniya). It's up to the 5th trade series: The Mean Seasons. It gets better and better. Snow finally gives birth to Bigby's children.. all 7even of them!! (A seventuplet?) There's more.. only 6ix of the children are of physical form & flesh..the 7th child is an intangible being, a child of the wind, literally.... why is that? Go read the paperback to find out.. (Suffice to say, thank you Grandpapa Bigby ;D )

Yeah, I love Fables too. Only read the first 3 novels and the 1000 Nights of Snowfall. I love that Bigby is the son of the North/West? Wind - it explains his Huff & Puff. Its a really refreshing series (much in the vein of Neil Gaiman). I loved Colin Pig.
