I think Macross stands equal with Gundams.
If i am not mistaken, Macross was made by people who were involved with Gundams way back in 1980s. Its humble beginning.
Both robot series are great as they pay attention to the mechanics, somesort.
However recently Gundams have become more dominating with its better but overused plots, a testament of their noteworthy strategy. Basically what they do is use the same plot over-and-over again but in a different universe. It's like when you watched Gundam Seeds, you stopped and think:"Wait! I remembered seeing something like this in another Gundam series"
Gundam Seeds really rocks, it kept me glued in front of my laptop for two days straight.
I can't say the same for Macross 7 however. Both Macross and Gundam focus on love. Whilst Gundam focus more on the devastation and aftermath of war as its underlying theme, Macross 7 focus on love and peace, mainly through music.
Lyn Minmei and Ishtar were good concepts, instrumental in motivating troops and defeating protocultures. Basara and its sound force are way bad example in defeating protodeviln. Can someone imagine controlling from a jet cockpit all alone using a guitar, singing and playing the guitar like mad believing that his/her song can solve any fights?

Hmm, hardly. Actually, SDF: Macross TV series supposedly to be a space parody lampooning of earlier UC Gundam, but along the way, Macross evolved to become more serious & standalone series.
In terms of promotion & merchandising alone, Gundam franchise clearly the big winner.
But, if we talked about influence, SDF: Macross (through Robotech incarnation) led to anime revolution & awareness in North America & Europe in late 80's, & turn many kids of the era into hardcore anime otaku now ....

You got it backward actually. The people behind Macross were influenced by Gundam's concept of mass-produced giant Robotic mechas in space opera settings, & the SDF Macross mechanical designer, maestro Shoji Kawamori plus SDF: Macross character designer, classic Haruhiko 'Hal' Mikimoto are later roped in to work in several Gundam series franchise following the duo's success with SDF: Macross series & Macross 'Ai Oboete Mas Ka' (DYRL) movie.

Well, Seed certainly an eye candy, but it lacked the depth of the more serious Gundam Turn A. I mean, with the whiny Coordinators, I practically stopped watching the buggers altogether.
The only Gundam that I take seriously & in the process of hunting is Gundam 08th MS Team series. Apart from that, I dig on Gundam Wing the Movie (the series is mehhhh).
